Of Identity: Examine Yourself Examine Yourself
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (2 Corinthians 13:5).
As you practice respecting and honoring the presence of God, one key spiritual discipline you must understand is being conscious of your TRUE IDENTITY IN CHRIST.
This calls for self examination; otherwise, you risk approaching the Father with an identity that’s not yours! That’s absurd!
The Bible records for us a story of how Jacob stole Esau’s blessing (Genesis 27). It shows how Jacob manipulated his father Isaac to take up a position that wasn’t his (Genesis 27:18-21). Jacob, the swindler- a man in the flesh!
No wonder, his father said, “The voice [is] Jacob’s voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau” (Genesis 27:22).
And there are many, even in the Church today, who approach the Father with the “voice” of Jacob but the “hands” of Esau! They are not what they say they are; always opposing themselves!
As much as Isaac continued and blessed Jacob because he discerned him not, for his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands (Genesis 27:23), God can’t be fooled that way. He sees beyond mere actions to the state of the heart.
This is why you must examine yourself, for God looks not on the outward appearance but on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
So, what’s the condition (the attitude and motives) of your heart towards Him? Examine yourself and approach the Father with your true identity!
